Tours from Lisbon: Best Day Trips & Local Tips

Imagine waking up in Lisbon, sunlight pouring through your window, a pastel de nata in one hand and a map in the other, wondering what’s just beyond the city limits. That’s the beauty of tours from Lisbon, because within less than two hours, you can be surrounded by fairytale castles, cliffside sanctuaries, turquoise beaches, or vineyards that seem to go on forever.

This guide dives into the very best day trips from Lisbon, including a couple of our absolute favorites here at Keep It Local Tours. Whether you’re a culture buff, nature lover, or someone who just wants a great photo and a cold glass of wine, there’s something for you.

Sintra: A Fairytale Just 30 Minutes Away

Let’s kick things off with Sintra. It’s not just close, it’s unreal. Nestled in the hills, Sintra is all romantic palaces, lush gardens, and misty forests that make you feel like you’ve stepped into another world. And the best part? We go there.

On our Sintra Tour, we make sure you experience more than just the postcard spots. Yes, there’s the stunning and magical Quinta da Regaleira.

A Sintra day trip is perfect for travelers who want a mix of history, nature, and those wow-moments you’ll be talking about for years.

Our tip here is to book tickets for Quinta da Regaleira in advance to skip the queues. Try Sintra’s queijadas (sweet cheese tarts) and travesseiros (puff pastries filled with almond cream) from a local bakery for a real treat.

Arrábida: Coastal Charm & Natural Beauty

Now, if your ideal day trip involves salt in the air, wine in your glass, and a view that stops you mid-sentence, then you need an Arrábida Tour.

Just across the river from Lisbon lies one of Portugal’s best-kept secrets: the Arrábida Natural Park. Think turquoise waters, rolling green hills, and secluded beaches that look like they’ve been lifted from the Mediterranean.

This is one of those day trips from Lisbon where you feel the city melt away the second you hit the coast road.

Our tip here is to pack a swimsuit if you’re visiting in summer, as Praia da Figueirinha and Galápos are perfect for a dip. Arrábida has the best beaches and you should miss them.  And don’t miss the buttery tortas de Azeitão, a local pastry that pairs beautifully with a glass of Moscatel wine.

Nazaré: The Surf Capital

Everyone’s talking about Nazaré these days and for good reason. Thanks to the underwater Nazaré Canyon, this fishing village has become world-famous for hosting the biggest surfable waves on the planet. We’re talking monster waves, sometimes over 30 meters tall.

You can visit the Fort of São Miguel Arcanjo to watch the daredevils tackle the waves or just enjoy the beachside vibes and delicious seafood. But as iconic as it is, Nazaré isn’t on our list of regular tours from Lisbon.

If you go on your own, autumn and winter are the best times to see the giant waves. For seafood, try the caldeirada, a rich local fish stew.

Óbidos: A Step Back in Time

Charming, walled, and wonderfully preserved, Óbidos feels like something out of a storybook. Cobbled streets, whitewashed houses, and a medieval castle that watches over it all. While it’s an easy drive from Lisbon and a favorite for many culture lovers, we don’t currently run tours there.

But if you go, don’t miss the “ginjinha” served in chocolate cups. It’s sweet, strong, and very, very Portuguese.

Go during spring to see the village covered in flowers!

Batalha: Gothic Grandeur Up Close

Batalha is home to one of Portugal’s most incredible architectural feats, the Batalha Monastery. It’s grand, Gothic, and full of intricate details that will leave you snapping photos from every angle. Walking through its cloisters feels like stepping back into medieval times, and the craftsmanship is jaw‑dropping.

That said, this isn’t part of our Private Tours offered at the moment, but we can always arrange it on request.

Visit late in the day when the sun lights up the stained glass windows and the whole place glows with color.

Fátima: A Place of Faith and Energy

Fátima is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the world, famous for the Marian apparitions of 1917. Whether you’re religious, spiritual or simply curious, the atmosphere is truly unique, there’s a sense of devotion and community that you feel as soon as you step into the square. The Basilica and the Chapel of the Apparitions are the highlights here.

It’s not a regular stop on our tours from Lisbon, but as a special request on a Taylormade Tour we can absolutely make it happen.

Our tip here is, if you’re there on the 13th of May or October, expect large celebrations, music, and candlelit processions that turn the whole town into a sea of light and song.

Évora: Alentejo’s Crown Jewel

If you’re looking for a slower, sun-drenched day out, consider Évora. This UNESCO-listed city blends Roman ruins, medieval charm, and a killer food scene all into one very walkable spot. From the Roman Temple to the eerie Chapel of Bones, there’s plenty to explore.

It’s also a gateway to the Alentejo region, known for its rolling plains, olive groves, and bold wines. Again, not currently one of our tours, but definitely worth the trip if you’re venturing out solo.

Here you should try the regional dish “migas” alongside grilled pork or lamb, and don’t leave without sampling an Alentejo red wine.

Serra d'Aire Tour

Serra de Aire e Candeeiros: Nature Off the Beaten Path

Looking for caves, karst landscapes, and something a little more rugged? Serra de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park is a breath of fresh air. Ideal for hikers and geology fans, it’s a totally different vibe from coastal Arrábida or fairytale Sintra.

It’s peaceful, wild, and not touristy. Perfect if you’ve got your own wheels and want to get off the beaten path.

Head to the Mira de Aire caves, Portugal’s largest, for a spectacular underground adventure. Perfect if the summer heat gets too intense.

Best Things to do in Sintra

Private Tours on Request

Most of the destinations mentioned above, like Nazaré, Óbidos, Batalha, Fátima, Évora, or Serra de Aire e Candeeiros, are not part of our regular schedule of tours.

Still, if you have your heart set on exploring one of them, it’s absolutely possible to arrange a tailored experience as part of a private tour. We’ll design the day just for you, balancing culture, food, nature, and plenty of time to enjoy at your own pace.
